Stepping into the 21st century, globalisation of the world economy and the exploding urban development have dominated the scene. Cities exceed the boundary of a country and have become regional and provincial metropolis, the focus of development for human civilization as well as the hub of information and culture. Moreover, urban development and infrastructure (technology, information, culture and arts) of these cities are also the most advanced and avant-garde, representing the epochal development of that particular country or region. In view of its humanistic nature, it is more common and obvious for literary work to reflect on the kind of urbanization that cities have undergone, and record the process of human civilization and social change together with the problems and expectations embedded in it.

In recent years, China has also undergone swift changes, many regions have grown rapidly from villages into cities and even special economic zones, such as Shenzhen, Zhuhai. Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei have further become major cities in Asia with its own unique cultural characteristics. Discussion on the 'three-cities' has emerged everywhere. The literature of the 'three-cities', their cultural similarities and differences, as well as the interrelationship and impact among them are the focus of this symposium.
